How Many Days Until Christmas? The Live Answer, Plus Dates for 2026 and 2027
“How many days until Christmas?” is one of the most searched questions on the internet every November and December — and the answer is delightfully simple: Christmas Day is always 25 December. The number that changes is how many days are left from today, and whether you count in your own timezone.
How the count works
Count the days from today to 25 December, not counting today itself. If today is 24 December, there is 1 day to go. If today is 25 December, Christmas is here — and the countdown on this site rolls forward to next year’s Christmas so the answer is never stale.
Timezones matter more than most people realise. Christmas arrives first in the Pacific — Auckland, New Zealand, welcomes Christmas Day hours before London, and London hours before New York. That is why this site’s countdown follows the timezone on your own device: a visitor in Sydney and a visitor in Los Angeles quite properly see different numbers on the same day.
Key dates around Christmas 2026
- First Sunday of Advent: Sunday, 29 November 2026 — Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas.
- 1 December: the first day of most Advent calendars, and the start of the Advent progress bar on the countdown page.
- Christmas Eve: Thursday, 24 December 2026.
- Christmas Day: Friday, 25 December 2026.
- Boxing Day: Saturday, 26 December 2026.
- Christmas Day 2027: Saturday, 25 December 2027.
“Sleeps” versus days
Children usually ask a different question: how many sleeps until Christmas? A “sleep” counts the nights you still have to sleep through, which is usually the same as the number of days left, rounded up — go to bed on Christmas Eve and there is exactly one sleep to go. The countdown page shows both, so the grown-ups get the precise hours and the children get the sleeps.
Make the wait part of the fun
Once you know the number, use it. Start the Secret Santa draw early so gifts have time to arrive, make a Christmas card while the message is still fresh in your mind, and let the children follow the Santa Tracker flight on Christmas Eve itself. The countdown is the same every year — what you do with the days is the part worth planning.
Quick answer: Christmas Day 2026 is Friday, 25 December. The live count in your timezone is at the top of this page and on the countdown page.
