When Is Christmas? Dates, Days of the Week, and Why Christmas Eve Matters
Christmas Day is fixed: 25 December, every year, in every country that celebrates it. What moves is the day of the week it lands on — and that single fact quietly shapes holidays, travel and family plans for millions of people.
Christmas dates at a glance
- Christmas Day 2026: Friday, 25 December 2026
- Christmas Day 2027: Saturday, 25 December 2027
- Christmas Eve 2026: Thursday, 24 December 2026
- Boxing Day 2026: Saturday, 26 December 2026
A Friday Christmas, like 2026, gives many people a long weekend without using extra leave — Christmas Day plus the weekend that follows. A Saturday Christmas, like 2027, is wonderful for celebrations but often moves the public holiday observance to a weekday in countries that mark it, so it is worth checking local holiday calendars before booking travel.
Why 25 December?
The date has been observed as the celebration of the birth of Jesus since the 4th century, and it has stayed fixed on the calendar ever since. Unlike Easter, which moves each year, Christmas is a fixed feast — which is exactly why “when is Christmas?” is such a popular search: people are usually checking the weekday, not the date.
Christmas Eve: the other big night
For many families, Christmas Eve is the main event. Gifts are exchanged on the evening of 24 December in much of Europe and Latin America, midnight services are held, and in the Santa story, Christmas Eve is the night of the great flight — which is why the Santa Tracker on this site is framed as a Christmas Eve journey. If you are planning around the holiday, treat 24 December as a full celebration day in its own right, not just the day before.
Advent: the four weeks before
Advent is the season of preparation that leads up to Christmas. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day — 29 November in 2026 — and runs through Christmas Eve. Advent calendars, with a small door or treat for each day from 1 to 24 December, are the most familiar Advent tradition, and the countdown page’s Advent progress bar follows the same 1–25 December stretch.
Planning tip: Book travel and post gifts by early December. The week of Christmas is the busiest travel week of the year in most countries, and delivery cut-offs usually fall a week or more before Christmas Eve.
